The music world has suffered a heartbreaking loss with the passing of legendary R&B and soul singer Angie Stone. Reports confirm that Stone, 63, died in a Sprinter van accident while traveling from Alabama. The vehicle was reportedly struck by an 18-wheeler truck, though further details about the incident have yet to be released.
Stones impact on music spans decades, beginning in the 1980s with the pioneering female rap trio The Sequence. As the first all-female group signed to Sugar Hill Records, The Sequence helped shape the early days of hip-hop with their groundbreaking single Monster Jam. At the time, Stone was known as Angie B., and her voice was the first to be heard on the influential eight-minute track.
Her musical journey continued as a member of Vertical Hold, an R&B trio known for the hit Seems You’re Much Too Busy. However, it was her solo career that cemented her legacy. Signing with Arista Records, Stone released her debut solo album, Black Diamond, in 1999. The album peaked at No. 9 on Billboards Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart and featured the hit single No More Rain (In This Cloud). She later joined Clive Davis J Records imprint, releasing Mahogany Soul in 2001, which climbed to No. 22 on the Billboard 200.
Throughout her career, Stone continued to deliver timeless music with albums like Stone Love, The Art of Love & War, and Dream. She also had a close musical relationship with D Angelo, co-writing songs for his classic albums Brown Sugar and Voodoo and touring as a backing vocalist.
Beyond music, Stone showcased her talents in acting, appearing in the 2002 comedy The Hot Chick and portraying Big Mama Morton in the Broadway production of Chicago. She collaborated with music legends including Prince, Macy Gray, Lenny Kravitz, Josh Groban, Ray Charles, Kool & the Gang, Guru, and Dionne Warwick.
Her contributions to music earned her three Grammy nominations, and just last year, she reached No. 1 on Billboards Gospel Airplay chart with her guest appearance on Damon Little No Stressing.
